Total Retail Sales in June 2021 in Puerto Rico reached a total of $3.33 billion, 13% higher than June 2020. Sales for the year to date reached a total of $18 billion, 35.1% higher than the same period in 2020 and 20% higher than in 2019.

Large non-chain stores increased their sales the most compared to June 2020 with an increase of 35.2% for a total of $548 million in sales. Year to date sales from January to June in 2021 is $ $2.29 billion, or an increase of 38.2%.  However, in terms of accumulated totals, the most significant increase in sales corresponds to medium stores sales with an increase of 40.8%. Compared to June 2020, Medium store sales increased by just 1%.

Small store sales in June 2021 were $176 million, an increase in sales of 33.6% compared to June 2020. Year to date sales in 2021 for small stores are 3.4% over the accumulated for the same period in 2020. Large Chain Stores including foreign and local sales in June 2021 were $1.827 billion, an increase of 12.4% compared to June 2020. When comparing the year-to-date sales, Large Chain Stores are 35.9% above the accumulated sales in 2020 and 32.9% higher than in 2019.

Supermarket sales in June 2021 were $405 million, an increase of 7.1% compared to June 2020. Compared to 2019, year to date sales are 42.3% higher.

Pharmacies and drugstores sales in June 2021 were $196 million, an increase of 2.7% compared to June 2020. The total accumulated sales from January to June 2021 are 17.2% higher than in 2019.

Restaurants and alcoholic beverage places sold $170 million in June 2021, 30.6% more than in June 2020. The total accumulated sales are 42.1% higher than for the year to date in 2020, and 1.4% higher than in 2019.

Department Stores Sales in June 2021 were $1.2 billion, an increase in sales of 26.2% compared to June 2020. The total accumulated sales are 33.8% higher than in 2020 and 27.4% higher than in 2019.

New & Used motor vehicles sales in June 2021 were $376,762,517, a decrease of 14.7% compared to June 2020 when sales were up after the lockdown in March. Accumulated sales from January to June 2021 are $2,463,237,010, 55.1% over the accumulated in 2020 for the same period. Compared to 2019 however, sales for the year to date are down 16%.

Overall, retail sales have remained at an elevated level compared to 2019 and 2020. Most categories have shown increases relative to 2019. High levels of federal funds reaching the island have led to this increase. As we reach the end of expanded unemployment benefits in September, we can expect retail sales to decrease back towards 2019 levels.
