The Cost-of-Living Index for the San Juan-Carolina-Caguas Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is 17.5% lower than in the metropolitan area of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With an index of 98.5 for the third quarter of 2021, the Puerto Rico MSA ranks 98th out of 294 MS areas. The highest index corresponds to utilities with 162.5, one of the most expensive in the nation with a ranking of 3/294. The cost of living for grocery items ranks 14/294 with and an index score of 120.5, a natural result of inflation in both categories, which is reflected in multiple other economic indicators. Miscellaneous goods and services have the next highest Cost of Living index with 96.3, a rank of 184/294. Transportation stood at 92.1 with a ranking of 223/294. Housing ranks 224/294 with an index of 75.8, followed by health care with an index of 68 and ranking of 294/294. Health care in Puerto Rico is the least expensive of the nation.
